CIGNA traces its history back to 1792 when a group of prominent Americans met in Philadelphia’s Independence Hall and created the Insurance Company of North America, forming the first marine insurance company in the United States and what now is the country’s oldest stockholder-owned insurer.
The company added life and health insurance to its expanding list of insurance and financial services products, eventually merging with Connecticut General Insurance Corporation in 1982 and forming CIGNA. Based in Philadelphia, the combined companies have insurance operations in every continent except Antarctica. CIGNA has earned an A- “Excellent” rating from A.M. Best based on its financial strength.
CIGNA is led by Chairman and Chief Executive officer H. Edward Hanway, who joined the company in 1978 as an assistant controller for Insurance Company of North America before its merger with Connecticut General in 1982. Hanway has a master’s degree in business administration from Widener University and in 2006 was awarded the prestigious Marco Polo Award by the government of China. The award is China’s highest award and given to foreign business leaders.
